Artist's Statement | << back
As a visual artist, I'm always studying and evaluating life and the world around me. My art is a response to these observations. I find the human figure to be the most compelling form in nature, it is an endless source for design and a primary source of inspiration for my stone and bronze sculpture.
My sculpture uses the figure as both a source and a departure for exploring abstract form. I utilize the design elements of line, contour, shape, form, texture and movement to manipulate these elements and adjust them to produce a dynamic three-dimensional expression.
Once I have carefully studied and selected a block of stone, I measure each side. I then make a variety of prospective drawings from different angles on the stone. The drawings assist me in developing a strong familiarity with its proportions.
The stones I use vary from alabasters to marble. I do mostly all my bronze work including the mold, wax, chasing, base, and some patina.
The goal for my art is to master the human figure, though that will take a lifetime because you learn new ways of working with sculpture everyday. Working and casting at the Allan Houser Foundry gave me even more desire to do stone and bronze monumental work, to have museums and gallery shows all over the world, and to someday be recognized like Allan.
