Biography | << back
Edmond Tate Nevaquaya (Comanche/Choctaw) is most appropriately referred to as a true “Renaissance Man” within Native scholars’ circles. Earning significant recognition world-wide, Nevaquaya is a renowned traditional dancer, singer, and award-winning graphic artist. He remains; however, a significant figure in the continued development of the modern American Indian flute playing idiom, carrying on the legacy established by his father, the late Doc Tate Nevaquaya.
Encouraged and tutored by his father – a master painter of legendary accomplishment, in his own right – Nevaquaya honed his skills on the canvas. His depth of knowledge and respect of the Plains Indian Experience have contributed to the detailed images rendered by his skillful hands. Working primarily with acrylics and watercolors, Nevaquaya endeavors to create a dialogue of historical merit with those who view his works – an intimate conversation documenting the reality of American Indian culture: vibrant, courageous, and perseverant.
Nevaquaya’s masterpieces have earned placement in important private and permanent collections world-wide. His works have garnered an impressive list of awards at the nation’s top venues, including the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival. In-demand internationally as lecturer, performer, and educator, the artist is currently collaborating with 17 Peck’s K.M. Lingad, a recognized expert in the field of Southwest American Indian Art History and Culture to curate and
produce a world-class touring exhibition of the complete works of Doc Tate Nevaquaya.
As the premier Native flute performer and traditional dancer of the United States, Edmond Nevaquaya has amassed a list of notable appearances and honors several pages-long, including
the 1996 Olympic Games; Washington, DC’s Night of the First Americans; and the internationally-acclaimed Native American Dance Theater. He is also a featured performer and frequent collaborator with world-renown Hoop Dancer, Kevin Locke and the Native Dance Ensemble, continuing to tour internationally with the world-famous troupe. Nevaquaya has released two CDs in Europe;
his latest effort, Doc Tate Nevaquaya Sons: Legend Legacy is soon to debut in the United States.
Edmond Tate Nevaquaya is exclusively represented by the Gallery at 17 Peck. In addition to his vibrant paintings, look for the world premiere of Nevaquaya’s own Limited Edition line of handcrafted Native Flutes at 17 Peck in late Fall 2007.
